The Lotta swastika
In 1921 artist Akseli Gallén-Kallela was asked to design an insignia for the Lotta Svärd organization. However, his suggestion did not meet the executive committee's wishes.
Another design was commissioned from another painter named Eric Vasström. Vasström's design features a swastika on a ground of four heraldic silver roses. The swastika is a symbol of rising sun and luck. It has a history that goes back to around 3000 BC. It has been used in Finland as early as the prehistoric period. In 1918 it was taken into use by the Finnish Air Force, as the wings of its first airplane, donated by the Swedish count Eric von Rosen, were decorated with the swastika on the Rosen family coat of arms.
